Manufacturers of many substances are required to produce Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for their products to disclose the ingredients and any health effects. However, they're not always very informative:

  • Because they're produced by the manufacturer, they tend to minimise any possible health problems (they might, for example, claim that there is "insufficient evidence" of any harm when other tests demonstrate health risks).
  • They don't always disclose all the ingredients in a product
  • They often deal with the fragranced product rather than the ingredient itself, sometimes on the assumption that the fragrance ingredient is a very small percentage of the product.  However a small amount of something dangerous that's used often, or in large amounts, can produce serious health issues.
